How your law enforcement tax dollars are wasted

  • Why send a SWAT team to check information reported to the sheriff days earlier?
  • What real crimes are being committed while law enforcement wastes time with compliance checks?
  • This proves the registry’s purpose is to shame and harass.

Nebraskans Unafraid recently received this report from a Nebraska resident who is forced to register. To guard against retaliation for telling the story, Nebraskans Unafraid is not divulging the identity of the person making the report.

Here is what we were told:

Around 9:00 a.m. [on a recent day], I heard my doorbell and I found two sheriff’s officers and two police officers on my front porch. It looked like a SWAT team.

My first question to them was, “What happened?” I thought that something major happened in the neighborhood. The police officer said, “We are just doing a check,” and he started asked me the basic questions (name, employment, telephone number, etc.). Then he asked me what vehicle I drove and I told him it was parked out on the street and the description of it.

It was a pleasant conversation. But I noticed one officer walked over and checked my vehicle from the outside. I found it strange that they would send out four officers. I have lived in the same place for years, and they previously only sent out one officer. In 15 years, I have never received so much as a traffic ticket.

How many real crimes are being committed elsewhere while these four law enforcement employees check on people who are not committing crimes and who are just trying to rebuild shattered lives?

I include a photo (above) of the law enforcement officers because it is overkill for this situation and it amounts to harassment, even though the officer asking the questions was polite. How much force is needed at my front door to do a check? Just a few days prior to this visit, I went to the sheriff’s office to verify all the information — the exact same information.

Maybe this force was for the community and its safety, or maybe it is just to shame and harass me. These tactics are starting to be used as a form of punishment without any due process. This is no longer just a “check.” Think of it: A gang of law enforcement officers shows up at your house in the morning hours when your neighbors are getting ready to go to work. It doesn’t matter how polite the law enforcement officers are. It is the general appearance that is given and the take-away for everybody in the surrounding area and your family members.

We try to protect our family members and keep them away from all this. Think how shocking and terrifying it can be to look out and see a gang of law enforcement on your front porch and not knowing why they are there.

The registry is really meant for harassment purposes and to terrify those on the list. Think about it: A lot of the people should have been off the list. Yet still they are being punished.

I always treat law enforcement with dignity and respect. Hopefully, they will always do the same in return.
